Growth Energy

Dear eTeam Member,

We need your voice today!

The United States Senate is debating legislation that is crucial to the future of ethanol, and Growth Energy needs you to take action today.

Please call or email your senator today, and ask them to support the Harkin-Thune amendment to prohibit the use of funds by Environmental Protection Agency to include Indirect Land Use Change emissions in the implementation of the Renewable Fuels Program.

If the Harkin-Thune amendment does not pass, the EPA's proposal could have a devastating impact on the future of ethanol. The amendment simply asks for a “time out” on the proposal to allow proper consideration of the science behind the theory of Indirect Land Use Change.
We know this is being debated today – so it is important you call and email your senators as soon as you can!

Without the Harkin-Thune amendment, the EPA's proposed rule would deliver a crippling indirect land use penalty for ethanol and biodiesel production in the United States – a big enough penalty to prevent both biofuels from qualifying as a low carbon fuel. Growth Energy's position is that the EPA's rule is not based on either science or sound economic modeling; in fact, data exists proving there is no indirect land use change from U.S. production of ethanol.

The U.S. House of Representatives has already taken action on the controversial issue of measuring international Indirect Land Use Changes related to biofuels production by passing legislation that would require a study by the National Academy of Sciences. If the Harkin-Thune amendment gets the support it needs, it will allow the U.S. Senate further time to debate how to proceed, and possibly adopt the House legislation requiring the NAS study.

Ethanol is the only existing alternative to gasoline refined from foreign oil. Domestic ethanol creates U.S. jobs, reinforces our economic and national security, and reduces greenhouse gases. We know the opportunity ethanol presents to the country's economic, national and energy security – now we have to send our message to the U.S. Senate.
